3 Ways For Your Pizzeria To Support Your Local Community

Published: February 9, 2024

When thinking about businesses known for growing good in their communities, neighborhood pizzerias consistently top the list. Whether it’s sponsoring youth sports, donating pies to schools and shelters or providing that first job opportunity to local teens, independent and small chain pizzerias are frequently seen as the cornerstone of the community—going outside the walls of their restaurants to serve the needs of the neighborhood.

Pizzerias who actively serve their communities recognize the value of this local commitment. Beyond the sense of pride, camaraderie and positivity these giving acts create among employees, supporting the local community pays dividends in the form of attracting new customers and encouraging repeat business.

Looking to build on your existing community contributions? Here are three easy-to-implement ideas, courtesy of three giving pizzerias across the country.

Help Neighborhood Dogs Find a Home

Nelly’s Italian Café in Spring Hill, Tennessee, the Grand Prize Winner of the 2022 Hillshire Farm® brand Great Pizza Give Back, supports a great variety of causes—many that benefit humans, and one that helps hounds, too. Teaming up with a local animal shelter, the café places flyers of adoptable dogs on every pizza box. Within weeks of starting the program, one very lucky dog was adopted by a very caring customer. This #PizzaForPups program also awards a $50 donation to the shelter when anyone brings in the flyer and adopts a dog—there were 20 adoptions within the first couple of weeks.

Combat Hunger, Locally and Globally

For Much Ado About Pizza, a Pleasanton, California-based pizzeria and a 2023 Hillshire Farm® brand Great Pizza Give Back Winner, giving back means delivering on a commitment to combating hunger. The pizzeria is a member of an organization called Slice Out Hunger, a non-profit that coordinates with independent pizzerias to donate pizzas and raise funds for hunger relief organizations nationwide. Much Ado About Pizza also works to fight hunger locally by donating money from their various pizza pop-up events—as well as donating pizzas to the un-housed in local creek beds.

Create a Local Scholarship

Among their many acts of giving, Dayton, Ohio’s Dayton’s Original Pizza Factory—the 2023 Hillshire Farm® brand Great Pizza Give Back Grand Prize Winner—had an idea to make a difference for those who might not otherwise be able to further their education. Working with a local community college, they’re establishing a culinary “DOUGH-larship” program. In addition to the $1,000 they’ve committed to the program, the pizzeria plans to donate an additional $1 to the scholarship from every pizza sold during a given month—giving customers the opportunity to match the $1 donation.
