Consumers may be watching their spending these days, but that doesn't mean they don't want to dine out or order in. While many restaurant-goers are searching for value, they are not necessarily looking for cheap food. Instead, diners are seeking delightful menu items they deem to be worth the price or that they perceive to be a slight bargain for what they’re paying.
According to an October 2024 press release from Circana, value has emerged as the primary driver of foodservice purchase decisions worldwide. The research firm noted that visits driven by deal-based occasions grew faster than non-deal occasions in the past year, and “consumers are increasingly seeking promotions, loyalty programs and creative offerings that deliver more than just low prices.” Operators face a challenge of offering dishes that answer consumer demand without making major changes to their menus. The right ingredients can help operators develop menu items that offer innovative dishes at the right price points.
For example, chicken is a versatile ingredient that is enjoying huge popularity on menus. Consumers craving chicken might choose a quick snack, a mid-priced sandwich or a premium meal. Operators can move up or down the value continuum to offer consumers what they want.
Value has been a common theme in restaurant promotions lately, so operators need to develop menu items that stand out in a crowded environment. One way to do this is with limited time offers. “LTOs allow operators to introduce new and exciting items to generate excitement and trial through unique selling points,” says Alison Geiger, Director of Sales, Strategy and Planning for Tyson Foods, Foodservice Poultry. “This offers a sense of value to customers, all while increasing sales and staying competitive.”
According to a November 2024 survey from Popmenu, 69% of consumers say they currently dine in or order takeout/delivery from restaurants at least once a week. The nationwide survey of 1,000 consumers also found that the majority (62%) of respondents expect to continue to spend the same amount on restaurants as they did in 2024, and 72% are looking for wallet-friendly meals.
Wallet-friendly meals include innovative menu items that satisfy consumer demands for on-trend flavors, textures and presentations. Offering different levels of value can help drive sales. For example, the operator can provide add-on options and bundle deals, highlight premium items or consider arranging the menu with a tiered pricing layout.
Geiger recommends offering a variety of price tiers and options, which allows operators to provide consumers with several choices. “This allows operators to cater to a larger, more diverse range of preferences, in turn increasing traffic and sales,” Geiger says.
Partnering with the right supplier can help operators develop a menu with various value tiers. “This strategic collaboration not only enhances the appeal and variety of the menu but also supports a sustainable and customer-focused dining experience,” Geiger says.
